Fritz Heider was born in Vienna, Austria on February 19, 1896. He was the second son of Moriz and Eugenie Heider. When he was just nine years old he injured himself and ended up with severe damage to his left eye. This injury would cause him to become interested in the study of visual perception. Years passed and he became interested in architecture and also law but this interested dissipated. Fritz began to focus his energy and interest on subjects such as philosophy and psychology. It was at this time that he asked his adviser if he could write a thesis as he saw many of the other students working on theirs. His adviser obliged and he published his first thesis in March of 1920.
